Pharmaceutical and Medical Industry Information The term “medical sales”  incorporates a multitude of specialties across the health care spectrum.  From selling general health care services to capital equipment, durable medical equipment, medical device, dental, veterinary, and various specialty pharmaceutical products, the field of medical sales can be very interesting.

In 2008, the changes in the economy caused the industry to experience its share of ups and downs as well.  Those outside of the industry flocked to medical sales, thinking the “grass was greener” somewhere else.  Sales representatives from various industries such as real estate and the financial markets have applied for these positions also not realizing they are competing for very coveted positions.  Many times, it is very difficult to compete with those individuals that already possess medical sales industry experience.   During 2009, over 53,000 pharmaceutical sales representatives were downsized, and we are still unsure of the total number of medical sales representatives still without work. However, while no industry is perfectly resilient to economic changes, medical sales still holds a bright future for those who choose their career path early and prepare for competition.

By understanding the various medical sales positions available today, you will be able to develop a career plan enabling you to target companies of interest.  Discovering why you are interested in pursuing an opportunity will assist you in the interview process when the interviewer asks you ,”Why are you interested in this position?”     The key to getting a job is passion.  Knowing what you want in life will help you get what you want in life. ” Don’t aim for success if you want it; just do what you love and believe in, and it will come naturally.” ~ David Frost
